Why should student need to understand sexual consent?

Updated: Feb 23, 2024

Consent is an agreement between participants to engage in sexual activity. .

The meaning of sexual consent is often misunderstood in disturbing ways by young people. There’s the idea that if you wear sexy clothing you’re asking for it; that silence during a sex act equals consent; and that women are always falsely accusing men of sexual assault and rape. Surveys have shown that one in two boys and one in three Girl's think it is OK to sometimes hit a woman or force her to have sex. All of which suggests a new approach is necessary. We need to teach young women and men about affirmative, enthusiastic and informed consent.

Sexual Consent

Well according to me that's the real meaning of Sexual Consent:

1. Active: Active Sexual consent means a person willingly agrees to have sex or engage in a sexual activity – and they are free and able to make their own decision. Making sure you get and give consent before having any kind of sex with another person (or people) really matters.

2. Clear: You don’t need to have to have a sit-down chat about it,  but consent should always be clear, so you must ensure you have it.

3. Knowing: Consent should not be made under the influence of Drug's or Alcohol. With their consent, you can have sex with someone who is intoxicated, but it may be worth thinking about why you want to ... Agreeing to have sex can only happen when it is free from undue influence and pressure. Exploiting a person's impairment from the use of alcohol or other drugs is not okay under any circumstances.

4. Ongoing: If you are ever in any doubt about having someone’s consent, you should stop and ask.

5. Voluntary: Sex is only sexy when it’s between two people who have given their consent. Unless you both want it and are both capable of making a free choice, you are breaking the law. Sex without consent is rape or sexual assault.
